Learn how to measure your dog's neck for the Black & White Campfire Blanket Dog Collar, understand fit trade-offs, and choose the right size for comfort and durability.
Quick answer
For the Black & White Campfire Blanket Dog Collar, measure your dog's neck snugly with a soft tape and add two fingers of space. The collar's adjustable design accommodates most breeds, but always check the size range before buying.
Why proper sizing matters for this collar
The Black & White Campfire Blanket Dog Collar is made in the USA from recycled materials, giving it a sturdy yet flexible feel. A collar that's too loose can slip off during walks, while one that's too tight may cause discomfort or chafing. Getting the size right ensures your dog stays safe and comfortable, and the collar's classic pattern stays looking great.
Because this collar uses a traditional buckle and multiple adjustment holes, you have some leeway to fine-tune the fit. But the starting point is always an accurate neck measurement.
Trade-offs: Adjustable vs. fixed-size collars
Unlike some collars with a single fixed size, the Campfire Blanket Collar offers several inches of adjustment through its buckle holes. This is great for growing puppies or dogs that fluctuate in weight, but it means you need to check the fit regularly. A collar adjusted to its smallest setting may still be too loose for a very small neck, and one stretched to its largest may not fit a thick-necked breed.
The collar's recycled material construction is durable but not stretchy, so the fit you set is the fit you get. There's no elastic give, which is actually a safety advantage—no risk of the collar stretching out over time.
How to choose the right size: decision rules
- Measure neck circumference: Use a flexible tape measure around the base of your dog's neck, where the collar naturally rests. Keep it snug but not tight—you should be able to slide one finger underneath. Record the measurement in inches. Measure twice to confirm accuracy.
- Add two fingers of space: After measuring, add about two finger-widths (roughly 1–1.5 inches) to the measurement. This is the ideal collar length for comfort and safety. The collar should not spin freely or slide over your dog's head.
- Check the collar's adjustment range: Compare your target length to the collar's listed size range. The Black & White Campfire Blanket Dog Collar has multiple buckle holes, so you can fine-tune the fit. If your dog's neck falls near the edge of a size range, choose the larger size for more room to adjust. When in doubt, size up—you can always tighten it.
- Test the fit after adjustment: Buckle the collar and check that you can slide two fingers easily between the collar and your dog's neck. The collar should not leave indentations on the fur or skin. Recheck the fit monthly, especially for growing dogs or seasonal coat changes. A properly fitted collar stays put without choking.
